The Ashland Beacon
On Saturday, November 30, those in the community can show their support to one of Ashland’s businesses that has thrived for three generations by shopping locally at Borders Sporting Goods. Not only does Borders offer the modern conveniences of an online store at store.borderssportingoods.com, but also the traditional conveniences of free layaway with 20% down and 90 days to pay, as well as delivery available with all safe purchases.
The entire community is affected when more money is spent at local stores like Borders, where more money is able to stay in the community. It was on November 27, 2010, that the credit card giant American Express launched the campaign known as Small Business Saturday, also known as Buy Local. Schools and organizations are helped through taxes as well as area sports teams, charities and events being helped. As a result, the community wins as a whole, and the business owners who took a chance at making their dreams come true win as well. (fbfs.com)
Third-generation family member, Todd Borders shares his family’s dream, and how his grandfather Virgil started the family business in 1937 as a gas station in downtown Ashland. The business later moved to Summit as a gas, grocery, and hardware store. In 1982 Todd’s father Greg started offering fishing equipment in the store, and in 1986 began selling guns in its basement.
Todd Borders said, “I am grateful for the opportunity given by my grandfather’s work ethic and my father continuing sporting goods – fishing, firearms, and safes. With our name on it, we take more pride.”
In 1997 Virgil Borders, the family man and business owner who was willing to take a chance on his dreams, passed. And in 1988 his son, Greg, quit his job at the Nickel Plant in Burnaugh to take on full-time responsibilities of running the store, and then began running the new store at its current location in 1998.
As well as Todd, his brother Tyler can also be found processing gun permits and providing customer service for both regular and new customers.
“The best part about owning a small business is a good core of people. In all, we have 16 employees,” Todd Borders said.
Sandy McSorley has been with the store the longest. She started out on the cash register when she was in high school, and now she does secretarial work.
Todd said, “She is like family.”
Another employee that is a great fit is Jim Reese. Reese said, “I was a car dealer for 48 years, and I knew guns real well. I work three days, but they call me if they need me to work more.”
Sarah Hambrick is quick to tell, “Co-workers are the best thing about working here and working with the public.”
Showing his sincere appreciation, Todd Borders shares, “Thanks for the support over the years and for the customers and employees who contributed.”
Located at 5876 U.S. 60 in Ashland, Borders is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. They are closed on Sundays.
