The Ashland Beacon
It’s time to slow down a bit, folks. Breathe. That’s it, just breathe.
We are so busy these days; we rush to that big box store where, all at once, we can buy toothpaste and dog food and a pumpkin pie, do a little self-checkout, and run to the next thing on our never-ending list.
Small Business Saturday is this weekend. This is a time to remember that, in our haste, we are slowly decimating the businesses of our friends and neighbors. I know, I know, we all have to hurry. But it’s time for a change. It’s time to remember that small business gives back more money, more tax dollars, more love to our community, and they are the way to go.
With so many options in our shopping experiences these days, it can be difficult to know where to turn, but our area is booming with exclusive stores on every corner, and I’m going to squeeze in just a bit about a few that you should certainly try to enjoy this weekend as you venture out to shop for your wives, mothers, sisters, daughters and girlfriends.
With several interesting stores tucked inside, the Camayo Arcade, located at 1530 Winchester Avenue in Ashland, has a little something for everyone on your Christmas list. Magnolia Southern Arts provides Kentucky crafted goodies and items, from soup mixes to soap, and beard oil to beehive candles, Magnolia has you covered. Their hours this Saturday are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and you can find them on Facebook by searching Magnolia Southern Arts.
Also at the Camayo Arcade is Melanie’s Bowtique, specializing in custom bows and headbands, unique clothing and accessories. If you have an adorable little girl in your life, this is the must-see store to find the perfect outfit for your Christmas card photos! Melanie’s also offers some adult items, so be sure to treat yourself while inside. Small Business Saturday hours at Melanie’s Bowtique are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; stop in for a $300 bow hanger door giveaway, door prizes throughout the day, and 20% off one item.
Before you leave the Arcade, you simply must run into Bella Boutique! This store has a great selection of clothing, as well as gorgeous home décor and the prettiest stocking stuffers you’ve ever seen. Standard Saturday hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There are several more shops in Camayo Arcade; make sure you peruse them all as you support local small businesses this weekend and throughout the future.
Another great find in Ashland is A Boutique, and you can find them at 1616 Carter Avenue in Ashland. This boutique’s normal operating hours on Saturdays are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Describing themselves as “a unique specialty store,” this is a space where you can grab an awesome outfit for your boss’ Christmas party, and also accessorize with their selection of Brighton jewelry and accessories.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Gillum Drug recently opened on Carter Avenue. Gillum Drug offers much more than just your meds, though, and everyone should hit them up for great stocking stuffers, gifts for your friends (they also have cool tumblers for teachers) and uncommon finds. Normal business hours at this location are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
Just down the street from the Camayo Arcade is Pretty and Poised at 1601 Winchester Avenue. This store opened in March of this year, and features women’s apparel, accessories and gifts. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays, Pretty and Poised always seems to stay one step ahead with the next season’s fashion trends, and is a great place to find an outfit that your family will rave over when you visit this holiday season.
So, you’ve read this far, and still haven’t found that perfect gift for the cherished women in your life? Let’s go outside of the box… What about a gorgeous new piece of furniture from Manning Furniture? Owner Kay Manning has anything you could dream of, be it a new dining room table, that sofa you’ve been dying for, or simply a new piece of wall art to refresh a room that you’re bored with. Manning’s is located at 1601 Highway 60 West, and will be running deals all weekend for their shoppers.
Looking for something extravagant? Call Christie Cruise and Travel Masters at 606.324.4555; owner Alison Christie and her wonderful agents can help with booking that dream vacation you’ve been pining for, and save you money while they’re at it. If you aren’t quite sure how to wrap a gift like that, head to Pollock’s Jewelers at 913 Winchester Avenue to snag a new Pandora charm that symbolizes travel; there are several to choose from.
If a getaway is out of Santa’s budget this year, maybe a night away could be arranged. I know that, personally, I love to gift a memory, so tickets to a show at the Paramount Arts Center is always at the top of my holiday shopping list. It isn’t so traditional, and gives you a fun evening out with your gift recipient. The new lineup for the 2020 season has just been released, and you won’t be disappointed with the variety of acts they’ve booked; there is something for everyone, young and old. Another solid option is a membership to the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center, where there is always something new to see and enjoy.
For the final item on my list, we’ll highlight the final person on your list – yourself! I know that, as a woman, I always seem to toss myself to the bottom of the list; my needs, wants and health generally come last, and there is just never a good time to get in some me time.
But I’ve found a few convenient ways to shimmy up the list this season. First and foremost, if you’re looking to shed a few pounds, accept nothing but the best and head to Slim and Trim in South Shore to lose the weight for good. Lisa and her team will take great care of you, and can be reached at 606.932.2040 to set up an appointment.
If you want to sparkle and shine for that aunt at the Christmas table that always has something not-so-sweet to say, then run to Ageless Aesthetics MediSpa at 2815 Lexington Avenue in Ashland. And believe me, it doesn’t even have to be Small Business Saturday for Ageless to run specials; they love to treat their clients to gifts and specials year-round. Christi Smith, owner of the medi-spa, and her team will help you with all of your skincare needs - Botox, laser hair removal, medical and spa services, and so much more.
In our special little part of the world, there are far too many phenomenal local businesses to highlight in one article. This Saturday, small business owners in Kentucky will open their doors with the hope that their community will support them, as they support us. Show up. Shop local. Make the difference in the lives of our neighbors, our friends, our allies, and support a place that supports you.
